The Janakpur High Court has upheld the decision of the District Court Dhanusha in the murder case of environmental activist Om Prakash Mahato (Dilip Mahato).

The joint bench of Justices Mahendanath Upadhyay and Dhruv Kumar Piya upheld the district court’s decision.

On February 24, 2023, the District Court Dhanusha sentenced Bipin Mahato, the owner of Churiya Mai Sand Processing Industry and the main planner of Dilip’s murder, along with the main accomplice, Muninda Mahato, to 25 years in prison each along with a Rs 500,000 compensation.

Jitendra Mahato was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison and fined Rs 250,000.

On January 10, 2020, 24-year-old Dilip Mahato was murdered near Aurahi river, located approximately five hundred meters from his house. He had gone to the river to stop Churiya Mai Sand Processing Industry from mining on the river. After not agreeing to leave the scene, Dilip was then brutally murdered.

After three years, the district court found Bipin, Munindra, and Jitendra guilty and sentenced them, while Bipin’s brother Vinod Mahato, along with workers Satyanarayan Mahato, Shatrughan Mahato, and Roshan Kumar Yadav, were acquitted by the court.
