Dhankuta chooses UML candidates to lead all civic bodies

A UML candidate takes part in victory rally in Dhankuta

Dhankuta, July 2

UML candidates have been elected both mayor/chairperson and deputy mayor/vice-chairperson at every civic body in the eastern hilly district of Dhankuta as the party completed clean sweep of the area.

In addition to this, more than two-third of all ward chairpersons elected by the voters in Dhankuta Municipality are UML members.

Dhankuta is home to RPP General Secretary Sunil Thapa and Forum-Nepal’s Rakam Chemjong and an NC-RPP-Forum-Nepal coalition was prepared to fight the UML in the district, considered a traditional stronghold of the communist party.

According to the district returning officer, the UML’s Chintan Tamang received 4,933 votes to be elected mayor of Dhankuta Municipality. His closest competitor Dinesh Rai of the Nepali Congress received 4,819 votes. Shakuntala Basnet of the UML received 5,112 votes to be elected deputy mayor.

The UML’s Birkha Bahdur Rai has been elected mayor of Pakhribas, and the party’s Devikala Paudel his deputy. In Mahalaxmi Municipality, it was the UML’s Parsuram Nepal and Manju Adhikari who were elected the posts. In Chhathar Jorpati, Sher Bahadru Limbu and his running mate Bhimkala Shrestha have been elected. The story is the same for Khalsa Chhintang Rural Municipality where Umnoj Rai and Ratnashwari Rai have emerged victorious.

In Chaubise, the party’s Khajindra Rai and his running mate Yagya Kumarai Ruchal have been elected chair and deputy chair.

During the Constituent Assembly Elections four years ago, the UML and the RPP had shared 1-1 seats in the district.
