The CPN-UML has started pulling down its old party office building located in Madannagar, Balkhu, Kathmandu.

Narayan Aryal of the UML party office said demolition of the office building, damaged in last year’s earthquakes, began from Thursday (June 16). Ten construction workers are razing the building, according to Aryal.

He said the workers started the demolition from the fourth floor. Ram Bahadur Shrestha, the contractor selected for the demolition through open bidding, will get Rs 3.1 million for the job. Krishna Gopal Shrestha, secretary at the party office, said the demolition will be complete in three months. According to Shrestha, the contractor will take away materials like furniture, Chinese bricks, the main gate, furniture, electronics, windows and doors, and all other things that are inside the building.

The building had suffered damage in quakes that rocked Nepal on April 25 and May 12 last year. The party headquarters has now shifted to Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu. The liaison committee of the party, the distribution unit of the UML mouthpiece Navayug and Navayug Press are still based in the old party office in Balkhu.
