Decisions of Truth and Reconciliation Commission acceptable, says Naya Shakti Nepal chief Baburam Bhattarai

Baburam-Bhattarai

Kathmandu, June 13

Coordinator of Naya Shakti Nepal, Baburam Bhattarai, said on Sunday that decisions of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission are acceptable to him.

A former Maoist commander, whose party waged a vicious 10-year-old insurgency in which thousands of people died and many got injured in the battlefield and outside, Bhattarai conceded that scars of the ‘people’s war’ remain.

He said: The rules of the revolution are indeed cruel. Now let’s put history on hold. We have let the TRC decide (on conflict-era cases).

He expressed hope that TRC will act impartially and added that he will accept its decisions.

Speaking at the formal launch of NSN, Bhattarai said he will not buy a house and property unless and until every Nepali has a house and property of their own.

As an architect, I have prepared designs of many houses, he said, promising he will not make blueprint for construction of his own house till he accomplishes his mission.

Bhattarai said he was aware of the point people often make: How can a person, who fought the war for 10 years and worked with the party that waged the war, represent a new force?

Coming from a farmer’s family, I have already become prime minister and there’s no higher executive position, Bhattarai said, adding: I want to dedicate the rest of my life to young generations and the country.
