Kathmandu, December 26

Ruling coalition member CPN-Maoist Centre has begun the party’s eighth general convention in Kathmandu on Sunday.

Amid a function in Kathmandu today, the party’s chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal inaugurated the event. Leaders of major political parties including Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-unified Socialist chairperson Madhav Kumar Nepal and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal chairman Upendra Yadav were also present.

The convention inaugurated coinciding with the Mao birth anniversary (Mao Day) will end on Thursday by electing a new central committee. It is almost certain that the event will elect Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the party leader for over 2.5 decades, as the party chairman again.

However, competitions for other positions look interesting for political stakeholders.

Recently, other major political forces of the country including CPN-UML, Nepali Congress and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have also held their general conventions to elect new leadership.

The law on political parties requires the parties to elect their leadership bodies at least once every five years.
