Court tells author Pratikshya to correct her novel and apologise to Badis

Saraswati Pratikshya and her novel ‘Nathiya’

Kathmandu, March 4

The Supreme Court of Nepal has ordered novelist Saraswati Pratiskhya to ‘correct’ some sections her novel ‘Nathiya’ and apologise to members of the Badi community, concluding that the sections disrespected the community members’ dignity.

Though the novel was promoted as a tale of pains of the marginalised Dalit community, some leaders of the community had objected to the use of some terms that they considered offensive.

Later, some of them had moved the apex court against the author.

Responding to the writ filed by Mina Nepali among others, a division bench of justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Bam Kumar Shrestha last week ordered the author to remove the names objected by the community and apologise to them.

Meanwhile, the court also ordered revisions to another novel ‘Ailani’ and a feature film ‘Pandit Bajeko Lauri’.
