Kathmandu, October 14
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has rejected the nomination of Giribahadur Sunar as Nepal’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
The decision followed questions raised over various allegations against Sunar, including reports that he had been deported from Germany.
The allegations were discussed during the committee’s deliberations before it announced its decision to reject his nomination.
The allegations against Sunar included claims of an extramarital relationship; harassment, threats and pressure on a former partner to commit suicide even after the two had reportedly reached a settlement at a district police office; and deportation from Germany after being detained and handcuffed by German authorities.
He was also accused of receiving Rs 3.3 million alongside Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Khagendra Sunar during the promotion process of a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police. Another allegation was that Khagendra Sunar collected money from various individuals and Giribahadur Sunar managed the funds.
Other allegations included claims that spiritual leader Swami Anand Arun had visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lobby for Sunar’s ambassadorial nomination, and that Sunar was affiliated with Hamro Nepal Party.
These were allegations raised against the nominee during the process; the committee’s rejection of his nomination does not, by itself, establish their truth.
