CMC leaves Nepal without paying tax

Kathmandu, April 28

Italian contractor CMC has left Nepal without paying its taxes, officials have found.

Large Taxpayers Office says that CMC, which left Melamchi Water Supply Project without completing it owes taxes worth Rs 180 million.

LTO chief Dhani Ram Sharma says that the office has publicly asked the CMC to pay their dues.

“They owe us around Rs 180 million which includes both income tax and value-added tax (VAT). We have asked them to come and pay the taxes within 15 days. There has been no response so far,” adds Sharma.

Officials at the LTO share that collecting taxes from the company will be difficult as it has already left the country.

LTO has written to Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee and asked it to to suspend the Italian company’s bank accounts. However, it doesn’t know that CMC doesn’t have any bank accounts remaining in Nepal.
