Kathmandu, September 16
The constitutional anti-corruption body, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, says it has arrested nine police personnel red-handed while they were taking bribes form contractors allegedly involved in extracting sand from Manohara River illegally.
The Commission’s spokesperson Rameshwar Dangal says personnel working in Kandaghari and Koteshwor areas of Kathmandu and Thimi of Bhaktapur districts were arrested during a sting operation launched on the basis of a tipoff.
The operation was launched on Saturday after locals complained that the police were letting the contractors continue their illegal work after receiving hefty bribes.
The arrestees include Subas Dhungana, Deepak Bharati, Gopal Shrestha, Umesh Yadav, Aman Chaudhary, Dipendra Kunwar, Mukesh Patel, Ratna Rijal and Man Singh Roka.
Dangal says each received Rs 5,000 to Rs 45,000 as bribe.
Meanwhile, the Police Headquarters called back chiefs of its offices in Kandaghari and Koteshwor for an internal probe.
