Kathmandu, July 16

The Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal and Naya Shakti Party Nepal have said they cannot accept keeping existing 240 constituencies intact.

They demanded that the government immediately form the Constituency Delineation Commission to divide the country into 165 constituencies for federal polls as provisioned in the 2015 constitution.

In a joint statement, chiefs of Forum and Naya Shakti, Upendra Yadav and Baburam Bhattarai respectively, say keeping the current provision intact will be against sentiments of federalism and democratic republicanism with inclusiveness.

Their statement comes few days after reports said Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba wants to continue with the current system and the main opposition CPN-UML also agrees on it on the condition that the share of proportional representation electoral system will be reduced.

Meanwhile, the two parties also demanded that the government immediately move forward the constitution amendment process as the amendment is a must to make a conducive environment for upcoming elections.

“Otherwise, it may invite a serious political crisis,” they warned.

The leaders also demanded that provincial polls should be held before federal ones.
