Kathmandu, June 5

The government has increased the per-unit cost of transfusable blood, making the treatment of patients requiring blood transfusion costlier.

The National Public Health Laboratory has circulated a notice informing them of the increase.

Whereas a unit of blood would cost Rs 525 so far, it will now cost Rs 810 to Rs 1,640.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Population had decided to increase the price of transfusable blood and directed the laboratory to fix it.

Meanwhile, blood donors and other stakeholders have protested the move. They say blood should be given free as donors donate it for free whereas blood transfusion is a basic health right also.
