Bhattarai: Govt won’t budge from Nijgadh airport plan

Yogesh Bhattarai assumes office as the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, on Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

Kathmandu, September 5

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Bhattarai says the government is determined to construct an international airport in Nijgadh of Bara district notwithstanding concerns raised by environmentalists.

He says various studies have suggested Nijgadh as an appropriate place for an international airport, and adding the government will not budge from its plan.

Speaking at an interaction in Kathmandu on Thursday, the minister, however, said, “We will try to harm the environment as less as possible during the construction. The government has been looking at debates for and against the project. Some logical issues are natural.”

He added that the only international airport in Kathmandu would not be sufficient for the country’s future; hence the second international airport would be necessary.

He said air route would be the most effective medium to bring more tourists in a landlocked country like Nepal; hence the government would expand the international air network.
