Kathmandu, December 10

One more person has been arrested for smuggling gold into the country via the Tribhuvan International Airport.

DIG Arjun Chand said Egyptian citizen Sherif Mohammad Lasin was arrested for bringing in 6.5 kilograms of gold.

Airport police also arrested two Sudanese citizens who looked to have been involved with Lasim based on CCTV footage.

While they have not admitted their involvement, past instances have revealed the participation of Sudanese citizens in the smuggling of gold to India through Nepal via the UAE.

Police, on December 7, arrested Chandra Ghale of Gorkha for bringing in 14 kilograms of gold.

Both Ghale and Lasim came on a Fly Dubai flight.

“Lasim brought the gold in a semi-solid form, similar to the previous case, where he had concealed the gold inside his jacket,” Chand told Onlinekhabar.

During the preliminary investigation, it appears that the recovered gold might have been transported to India.

On December 8, police seized two kilograms of gold from Nagdhunga in Kathmandu. On December 6, the Kathmandu Valley Crime Division conducted a raid on a gold shop in New Road, suspecting the sale of smuggled gold, and successfully seized nearly 8 kilograms of gold.
