After five months, government allocates Rs 1 billion for Terai flood victims

Kathmandu, January 9

After five months of the disaster, the government on Tuesday allocated more than Rs 1 billion for relief of victims of floods in various Terai districts.

The National Reconstruction Authority authorised the Ministry of Home Affairs to spend Rs 1 billion and 40.6 million for warm clothes for the victims so as to protect them from the cold wave and renovate their houses.

The Authority’s Information Officer Manohar Ghimire says the decision was made after the Ministry of Finance released the amount.

The Authority’s Acting Secretary Yamalal Bhusal says each of 41,626 households will get Rs 15,000 cash to renovate houses and Rs 10,000 to buy warm clothes.

Chief of the Flood Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project at the Authority, Suman Karna, says the grant distribution will begin on Wednesday via district disaster management committees.

He says discussions with political parties and other stakeholders is underway to make the campaign more effective.
