Salyan’s paddy fields turn golden as rice ripens (Photos)

Paddy fields across Salyan have turned golden as the rice crop farmers planted a few months ago ripens. The fields and terraces have taken on a golden hue, creating picturesque scenes across the district’s rural areas. Farmers are now busy in their fields as the harvest season approaches.

Paddy is one of the major food crops grown in Salyan. According to the Agriculture Office, rice is cultivated on around 6,000 to 7,000 hectares of land in the district annually. The office said the district has produced more than 28,000 metric tonnes of paddy in recent years.

Agricultural technicians say rice production in the district could increase further with expanded irrigation facilities, the use of improved seeds and favourable weather conditions.

Marmaparikanda, Bangad Jiula, Gari Jiula, Resham Jiula, Kalimati Rampur and Kalche-Kaprechaur are among the district’s major paddy-producing areas.

This year, however, Bangad Jiula presents a different picture. While paddy has ripened and fields have turned golden across most parts of the district, rice transplantation in Bangad was delayed due to untimely rainfall. As a result, while fields elsewhere have already turned golden, those in Bangad Jiula remain green.

Salyan has so far remained self-sufficient in food grains. Paddy produced in the district meets a significant share of its food requirements.
