Hustle of rice planting in Salyan (Photos)

Rice planting season has kicked off in Salyan district this year. Farmers across various villages and fields in the district have begun wading into the mud to transplant rice seedlings.

Planting has picked up pace in areas with rainfall and irrigation access, while some locations are still awaiting sufficient rain.

The fields are now bustling with farmers preparing for the transplanting season, bringing a lively atmosphere to the villages. Some families are working together on their own plots, while others are joining neighbours.

Rice is one of Salyan’s primary food crops. According to the District Agriculture Office, around 6,000 to 7,000 hectares of land are cultivated with rice annually in the district, with production in recent years reaching over 28,000 metric tonnes. With better irrigation, improved seed varieties, and favourable weather, output could increase further.

Tied to the food security of families throughout the year, rice planting for farmers is not merely an agricultural activity; it has become a festival of enthusiasm, hard work, and tradition. The laughter, joy, and collective effort in the fields during planting season make village life all the more vibrant.

Areas such as Marampari Kaanda, Bangad Jiula, Gari Jiula, Resham Jiula, Kalimati Rampur, and Kalche Kaprechaur are recognised as major rice pocket zones in the district. Salyan remains a food-self-sufficient district to this day.
