More than 500 containers stranded from Lete to Korala

Mustang, October 7

Around 500 containers have been found stranded in queues at various locations along the road from Lete in Mustang to the Korala border point.

The containers have been stranded at different locations in the district for the past week after floods, landslides and snowfall following rainfall from Asoj 8 to 11 obstructed the road.

Road repairs are underway at Pokharebagar, Kunaute, Baisari and other locations in Myagdi, which were affected by the heavy rainfall. Technicians involved in the road project said it could take another week for the road to fully reopen.

As the road remains closed, more than 70 containers and over 100 electric vehicles have been parked at the bus park in Jomsom.

Although the Beni-Jomsom road remains blocked, some containers carrying goods have been brought to Jomsom from the Korala border point. The containers were transported after the Kaligandaki Corridor Road Project repaired blocked sections along the Jomsom-Korala stretch. They had been stranded at the Mustang Customs Office.

Earlier, hundreds of containers had remained stranded in the border area as customs clearance of goods imported from China could not be completed due to electricity and internet disruptions caused by floods and landslides.

The central 33-kV electricity transmission line and internet services in Mustang had remained disrupted for a week after floods, landslides and river erosion damaged power poles at dozens of locations in Myagdi.

The disruptions have affected regular services at the Upper Mustang Customs Office.

Gobinda Gurung, a container driver stranded at the Korala border point, said around 300 containers carrying imported goods and more than 200 electric vehicles were still awaiting customs clearance.

As goods imported from China through the Korala border and intended for the Dashain and Tihar festivals cannot be delivered to their destinations on time, traders and consumers have been affected. Consumers have been unable to purchase the goods they want, while the disruption has also affected economic activity in the Nepali market.
