Melbourne, September 27
The Nepali community living in Melbourne, Australia, celebrated Indra Jatra with great festivity on Saturday. Organised by Newa: Guthi Victoria, the event gave Nepalis living abroad a glimpse of Kathmandu’s Durbar Square.
Held at the Australian Nepalese Multicultural Centre in Diggers Rest, the celebration featured a vibrant procession including the living goddess Kumari, the White Ganesh, and Lakhe dances. A traditional chariot and a backdrop resembling Kathmandu’s Durbar Square were set up at the venue to give participants a feel of being in Nepal.
The event, themed “Let’s celebrate culture, let’s support the community, together let’s respect, preserve and promote our culture,” was free to attend.
Running from 10 am to 4 pm, the event drew a significant turnout of Newa community members and other Nepalis living in Victoria. Attendees said such programs play an important role in preserving traditional culture abroad and passing it on to the next generation.
