Devotees across the country are observing Kushé Aunshi, or Father’s Day, on Friday by honouring their living fathers and remembering those who have passed away.
Kushé Aunshi, or the new moon day in the month of Bhadra, is traditionally observed as Father’s Day or Pitri Aunshi in accordance with the Sanatan Hindu tradition.
On this special day, children traditionally honour their living fathers by offering them their favourite dishes, fruits and sweets, presenting them with new clothes and seeking their blessings.
It is widely believed that receiving blessings from one’s father brings happiness and peace. Therefore, even children who live away from home for work make time to visit their fathers on this day.
Those whose fathers have passed away, however, visit various sacred pilgrimage sites to perform Shraddha, Tarpan and other religious rituals and make offerings in memory of their deceased fathers. On this occasion, the Gokarneshwar Mahadev Temple, a historic and religious pilgrimage site in northeastern Kathmandu, has been crowded with devotees since early morning.
Similarly, large numbers of devotees visit pilgrimage sites including Devghat in Tanahun, Bishnupaduka in Sunsari and Barahakshetra to bathe in the sacred waters and pray for the salvation of their deceased ancestors.
