A copper vessel containing more than 2,300 medieval copper coins has been discovered in Babhani, Ward No. 5 of Kapilvastu Municipality.
The archaeological find was made by local farmer Rajaram Yadav while working in his field.
After residents informed the police, the artefacts were recovered by a team comprising local representatives, elected officials and staff from the Kapilvastu Museum. The copper vessel and the coins have since been transferred to the museum for preservation and further study.
Kapilvastu District Police Chief SP Manohar Prasad Bhatt said the artefacts had been handed over to the museum for detailed examination.
Shanti Sharma, chief of the Kapilvastu Museum, said the discovery is believed to date back to the 12th or 13th century, placing it in Nepal’s medieval period.
“The unearthed artefacts are estimated to belong to the 12th or 13th century,” Sharma said.
According to her, museum officials are continuing to remove the coins from the copper vessel. So far, 2,314 copper coins bearing Arabic inscriptions have been recovered. The copper vessel measures approximately 23 centimetres in height.
