Blossoming rhododendrons enhance appeal of Mundum Trail

Khotang, May 3

The Mundum Trail, listed among Nepal’s top 100 tourist destinations, is drawing increased attention as vibrant rhododendrons bloom across its hills this spring. The trekking route, beginning from Tawabhanjyang in Sakela Rural Municipality-3, is adorned with red, white and pink flowers, creating a striking landscape that attracts both domestic and international visitors.

Residents say the seasonal bloom has significantly boosted tourist arrivals. Trekkers, including a recent group led by Ojan Babu Acharya from Diktel, described the trail as mesmerising, with expansive meadows adding to its charm. Visitors frequently share images and videos on social media, further promoting the destination.

Beyond natural beauty, the trail offers rich biodiversity and cultural significance. Researchers have identified 18 rhododendron species around Maiyung meadow. Wildlife such as red panda and Himalayan tahr, along with birdlife, enhances the trekking experience.

The region also reflects the traditional transhumance practice, with herders grazing sheep, yaks and horses in highland pastures. The trail is deeply connected to Kirat culture, with “Mundum” referring to the community’s sacred scripture.

Stretching across Khotang and Bhojpur districts, the trail includes key sites such as Temke Maiyung, Salpapokhari and Silichung, and typically takes 10–13 days to complete.
