Kathmandu, July 5
Police have arrested two people, including an inspector, on charges of financial embezzlement at the Armed Police Force’s school in Kirtipur.
Those arrested are Kalpana Gurung, an inspector who also serves as the school’s chief accountant, and Lila Lama, both working at the school. SP and spokesperson Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of the Kathmandu District Police Range said the two were arrested on Saturday.
“We arrested the two yesterday. Today we’ll extend their remand and move the investigation forward,” SP Bhattarai said.
The Armed Police Force Headquarters had written to the Kathmandu Range requesting action over the alleged financial embezzlement, after which a team from the Range carried out the arrests.
The two are under investigation on charges of embezzling a large sum from the school. They are accused of siphoning off crores of rupees by keeping funds that should have been in the school’s account in personal accounts instead.
Gurung, the accounts chief, is said to have been the main planner behind the scheme. The Armed Police Force Headquarters had initially investigated the matter itself; once the two were found to be at fault, it sent a letter asking police to investigate and file a case.
Gurung, described as the main planner, has worked as the school’s accountant for the past six years. Mahendra Hamal, who works in the welfare section, has also been drawn into the investigation in this case.
