Indefinite curfew imposed in Birgunj Metropolitan area of Parsa

Parsa, February 23

Tension has gripped the Shripur–Murli Chowk area of Ward No. 11 in Birgunj Metropolitan City after a dispute broke out between two groups of youths on Sunday night.

The disagreement, which reportedly began over a minor issue, escalated into a violent clash involving stone pelting between the two sides. Following the incident, the local administration imposed a curfew across the metropolitan area from early Monday morning.

Hari Bahadur Basnet, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Parsa, said the dispute stemmed from a minor disagreement over vehicle parking, which created tension for some time. “The clash occurred over a parking issue and involved stone pelting. The situation is now under control,” he said.

According to the District Administration Office, Parsa, a curfew has been enforced from 9:45 am Monday until further notice to bring the situation under control. The order has been issued under Section 6 (a) of the Local Administration Act, 2028.

The curfew applies within the designated boundaries of Birgunj Metropolitan City: Bypass Road to the east, the Sirsiya River to the west, Gandak Chowk to the north, and Shankaracharya Gate to the south.

As per the order issued by Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal, all forms of gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, assemblies, meetings, sit-ins, or encirclement activities have been strictly prohibited during the curfew period. Vehicular movement has also been banned, and all activities except essential services have been suspended.

The administration clarified that the curfew was imposed to prevent possible untoward incidents and to ensure the safety of lives and property, as recent developments indicated a risk to peace, security, and public order.

Upon receiving information about the incident, a large number of Nepal Police personnel, other security forces, and the Nepali Army were deployed to the area. Police stated that the situation was brought under control after security personnel reached the site.

According to locals, a few youths sustained minor injuries during the clash. Security has since been tightened in the area. DSP Basnet said police teams are maintaining continuous surveillance to prevent further incidents and that those involved in the clash will be identified and investigated accordingly.
