Ministry of Urban Development has sought 570 million rupees in the first phase of funding to rebuild structures damaged during the Gen Z movement, with plans to begin reconstruction within the current fiscal year. The ministry submitted the funding proposal to the Ministry of Finance on Monday.
“Our effort is to begin reconstruction of the structures for which damage assessments have already been completed as quickly as possible,” a senior official at the Ministry of Urban Development said. “Accordingly, a proposal for the first phase was submitted to the Ministry of Finance just yesterday.”
The official clarified that the requested amount does not cover buildings designated as VVIP structures under the federal government.
“Structures such as Singha Durbar, the Parliament building and the President’s Office are not included,” the official said. “A complete assessment of damage to those buildings has not yet been finalised. The current proposal covers only the structures for which assessments have already been received.”
Construction, reconstruction and management of VVIP buildings fall under the Federal Secretariat Construction and Management Office, which operates under the Ministry of Urban Development.
According to ministry sources, the funds sought in the first phase are intended for structures overseen by the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction.
Overall, the cost of reconstructing government buildings and structures damaged during the Gen Z movement is estimated at least 36.3 billion rupees. This estimate comes from a report prepared by a committee led by Rabi Lal Panth, secretary of the National Planning Commission.
The report states that physical structures and other properties across all seven provinces, spanning 54 districts and 262 local governments, suffered damage. In total, 2,671 buildings were affected, according to the findings.
