Tension at Bharatpur Hospital following death of woman during childbirth

Chitwan, November 10

Tension erupted at Bharatpur Hospital on Saturday after the death of a woman who had been admitted for childbirth. Relatives of the deceased accused the hospital of negligence and staged a protest within the premises.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Sangita BK, originally from Parsa and residing in Kalika Municipality–2, Chitwan. She died during treatment on Saturday, prompting her family and relatives to chant slogans against the hospital, alleging medical negligence.

According to family members, Sangita was admitted to Bharatpur Hospital on November 6 for a check-up. Doctors reportedly attempted a normal delivery after an ultrasound showed no fetal heartbeat.

Her condition deteriorated on November 8, and she was shifted to the ICU around 9 pm the same night. She died at 11:40 pm, according to hospital sources. Hospital spokesperson and obstetrician-gynecologist Dr Ram Prasad Sapkota denied any negligence, stating that Sangita died due to pulmonary embolism.

However, the family claimed that she died because doctors failed to perform a cesarean section immediately after detecting the absence of the baby’s heartbeat. The hospital clarified that since the fetus had already died inside the womb, doctors attempted a normal delivery to avoid subjecting the mother to unnecessary surgical risk.

Dr Sapkota said Sangita suffered cardiac arrest shortly after being administered medication to induce labour. Despite receiving CPR and being rushed to the ICU, efforts to save her were unsuccessful.
