Kathmandu, August 27
Police have said 270 bodies have been found so far in connection with Wednesday’s devastating flood on Rasuwa’s Bhotekoshi River. According to police, 108 bodies alone have been recovered in Chitwan district.
Bodies have been kept at hospitals and even at the premises of the chamber of commerce and industry across the district, according to Chiranjivi Sharma, spokesperson and Assistant Chief District Officer at the District Administration Office. Sharma said complete information on exactly how many bodies are where is not yet available.
Bharatpur Hospital at capacity
As of 3 p.m. Thursday, Bharatpur Hospital had 37 complete bodies brought in by the flood, hospital spokesperson Dr Ram Prasad Sapkota said. He added that the hospital also has 27 body parts, hands, feet, and heads belonging to different individuals.
Among the complete bodies are 13 women, 19 men, 4 boys, and 1 girl. Dr Sapkota said documentation procedures for the bodies are currently underway.
He said the hospital is facing difficulty storing the bodies, as its postmortem facility has capacity for only 24. Since 17 bodies were already at the hospital before the flood victims arrived, managing the additional bodies has been extremely difficult, he said.
Arrangements are now being made to keep bodies at the chamber of commerce premises instead. Sapkota said that after documentation, bodies will begin being transferred there starting this evening.
