Police in Jhapa district of eastern Nepal arrested five persons, including a non-gazetted staffer of the District Administration Office, for allegedly granting Nepali citizenship to 16 non-Nepalis.
The arrested have been identified as DAO staffer Tejendra Neupane and five locals of the district headquarters, Bhadrapur, namely: Tek Bahadur Gurung, Lok Raj Baral, Prem Raj Timilsina and Bhim Bahadur Limbu. Baral is the ward secretary of Birtamod municipality-8.
SP Dinesh Raj Mainali at District Police Office informs that an investigation into the case has been initiated by keeping them behind bars at the DPO.
Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs had already initiated an investigation by suspending three employees for granting Nepali citizenship certificates to non-Nepali residents. The suspended employees are Administrative Officer Gaurav Dhungel, non-gazetted first-class officer Megh Raj Niraula and clerk Neupane.
According to administration sources, citizenship certificates were granted to 16 non-Nepalis in past three years.
