Kathmandu, August 8
Nepal Engineers’ Association has asked the government not to accept plans/designs passed by engineers who aren’t registered with the Nepal Engineering Council. The request was made by officials of the Engineering Association at the legislative committee of Parliament on Thursday.
Engineers who have graduated from a university can obtain their license number after submitting their educational documents. However, most government employees who have entered civil service as overseers have not registered themselves at the council, even though they have been promoted to the post of engineer.
If the government does not agree on the terms set by the association, designs passed by such employees will be deemed void. The government is also planning to only issue licenses to engineers who pass an exam, by amending the Engineering Act 2055. The amendment bill is currently at the National Assembly.
If the bill is passed, engineers will have to pass an exam similar to that of the doctors to be allowed to practice their profession.
