Kathmandu, January 2

Local officials of the core city area in Kathmandu Metropolitan City including Ason and Indrachok have decided to bar four-wheelers and heavy vehicles from the area.

However, two-wheelers will be allowed to enter the area. Likewise, all kinds of vehicles will be allowed to enter during nighttime, from 7 pm to 7 am, according to Ward 18 Chairperson Nhuchhekaji Maharjan.

Earlier, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City in coordination with traffic police had imposed the similar ban in Kathmandu’s tourist hub, Thamel, and holy Pashupatinath area.

The new rule will come into effect from January 16.

The rule applies to Bhotahiti, Ason, Indrachok, Machhindrabahal, Bhedasing, Naradevi, Yatkha, Tengal, Bangemudha, Thahiti, Tyauda, Tamsipakha, Kilagal, Jwagal and nearby places.

Chairpersons of wards 17, 18, 24 and 25 made the decision collectively.

“Inner roads of the city are narrow, but they have their own livelihood. Therefore, we are preparing to preserve their life,” Ward 25 Chairman Nilkaji Shakya says, “We are also trying to ease traffic congestion in the city.”

Officials say locals of the area will be given special permits to let them commute smoothly.
