Confidence-building measure? KP Oli government holding interaction with foreign diplomats

KP-Oli-2 (1)

Kathmandu, May 11

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is holding an interaction with foreign ambassadors at Hotel Yak & Yeti in Kathmandu on Wednesday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited the diplomats for the interaction slated to begin at 3 pm.

At the meeting, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa will inform the diplomats about Nepal’s contemporary situation and government’s activities.

Mohan Shrestha, Thapa’s press adviser, said the interaction will focus on the government’s policies and programmes for the fiscal 2073-74, post-quake reconstruction work, the upcoming budget and local elections. PM Oli and his deputy Thapa will respond to questions coming from the ambassadors.

The interaction comes at a time when Upendra Yadav, president of the Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, has said the Oli government has lost trust at the international level and that it aims to finish off federalism by holding local elections.

Also to note is the fact that Nepal’s relations with India are under stress, with the India-locked country trying to develop supply lines up North in view of the recent Indian Blockade and recurring strife in its southern plains.

Not so long ago,  India and the European Union had issued a joint statement from Brussels, calling the Nepal government to amend Nepal’s constitution incorporating political issues, in a reference to demands coming from the agitating forces in Nepal’s southern plains.

Some time ago, the United Democratic Madheshi Front, the force behind the Tarai-centric agitation, had held talks with foreign ambassadors.
