4 ministers who had defected from Maoist Centre to UML lose House membership

L-R: Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Lekh Raj Bhatta, Prabhu Sah, and Gauri Shankar Chaudhary

Kathmandu, April 8

Four ministers of the Oli cabinet who had defected from the CPN-Maoist Centre to the CPN-UML following the dissolution of the House in December 2020 have been removed from their positions as members of the House of Representatives.

During a House meeting on Thursday, Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota announced that Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Lekh Raj Bhatta, Prabhu Sah, and Gauri Shankar Chaudhary have been relieved of the House membership following a notice by the party from which they were elected that the party removed them.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led party had submitted the letter to the Federal Parliament Secretariat.

According to some experts, being removed from the House also means they cannot remain ministers anymore. Advocate Tikaram Bhattarai says the prime minister needs to reappoint them from outside the House if he wishes to retain their ministerial berth.

As per the constitution, a non-parliamentarian can be inducted into the cabinet for maximum six months.
