2024 Mahindra XUV400: Powerful electric SUV at a mid-range price launched in Nepal

The Indian car manufacturer Mahindra has introduced its first electric SUV, the 2024 Mahindra XUV400, in Nepal. This electric car from Mahindra is based on the ICE car, the Mahindra XUV300. Mahindra has a rich history in terms of electric vehicles. Before the electric SUV, Mahindra had launched the REVAi and the Mahindra E20, which were among the most popular options. Both fall under the Mini electric cars category for the compact size which we can still see some running in cities.

The XUV400 is completely different and is a proper SUV with bold and modern looks. The electric SUV was first launched back in January of 2023 in India. The Pro variant was launched in January of this year. In Nepal, the electric SUV is only available in one option called the EL Pro.

The Mahindra XUV400 will compete against the BYD Atto 3, Tata Nexon EV Dark, Omoda 5 EV, MG4 EV and GWM ORA in the mid-range price in Nepal. With tough competition in the electric car market, what can Mahindra come up with the electric SUV? Let us see what the electric SUV provides in terms of specifications.

Design

Exterior

The design of the Mahindra XUV400 is based on the Mahindra XUV300. The SUVs share a similar design language with the signature aggressive Mahindra styling seen on the Mahindra XUV series. The exterior has major highlights of copper highlights making the car quite different from others. It has a closed grille on the front with copper accents on the logo. The LED headlights are sharp and give a crisp throw. The LED DRLs are L-shaped with a thin design and above the headlights. There are copper-accented L-shaped lines flowing from the headlights to the fog lights. There is a small grille opening near the lip for airflow.

Coming to the sides of the Mahindra XUV400, the copper accents flow to the side skirts. The whole roof is copper coloured complementing the whole look. The side-view mirrors also have integrated indicators for better safety while turning.

The doors have traditional handles and open wide for easy in and out. The wheels are 16-inch diamond-cut alloys which complement the overall look.

The rear of the Mahindra XUV400 is similar to that of the Mahindra XUV300, featuring LED taillights. Copper accents are present on the rear, complementing the design of the front and sides. The spoiler provides a sporty look, and the brake light enhances visibility during braking. The rear bumper is dual-toned and gives a premium finish.

Interior

The interior of the Mahindra XUV400 is luxurious with a dual-tone colour theme with copper accents. The copper accents can be seen all inside the electric SUV. The white and black dual-tone colour highlight the premiumness and comfort. The front dash is hard plastic whereas the instrument panel has soft-touch materials. The front dash and the instrument panel of the electric SUV are similar to that of the Mahindra XUV700.

The steering wheel on the XUV400 is a flat bottom type wrapped in leather. The steering wheel has a Mahindra logo in copper colour on the centre. The steering wheel has controls for audio, music, call, cruise control and menu. The digital instrument cluster is 10.25-inch in size and has a bright and interactive output. The layout can be changed according to the user’s preference and displays information such as modes, speed, distance travelled, power, battery percentage, range, warning lights and tyre pressure.

Coming to the centre of the front panel, there is a 10.25-inch instrument cluster which is modern and fast. The UI is easy to use and can control the settings, music, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and display car information. It also has Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for further convenience. There are physical buttons just below the infotainment system, which are handy for quick shortcuts. The AC and the climate control sit just below the infotainment system and include physical control and knobs which are handy.

The centre console of the Mahindra XUV400 is simple with a wireless charger and two USB ports. The gear knob is wrapped in copper colour and has a premium look with options for park, rear, neutral, drive and L for a single pedal drive. There are two cupholders which are of decent size. There is also a storage compartment with a handrest for easy access to important things.

The seats on the Mahindra XUV400 are leatherette wrapped. The seats are comfortable with soft cushioning and copper stitching to complement the overall theme of the electric SUV. The front driver seats is height adjustable. All the seats have headrest and can also be adjusted front and back according to the requirement. The rear seats are comfortable and seats 3 people with comfortable legroom and headroom. The rear seats also get rear AC and USB charging ports.

The Mahindra XUV400 has electrically operated sunroof which allows natural light to enter the cabin. There are 4 speakers and 2 tweeters which provide proper sound experience. The bootspace on the electric SUV is quite spacious with 378 litres. The rear seats also has 60:40 split function for further convenience.

Performance

The Mahindra XUV400 electric SUV is powered by a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) that delivers a maximum power of 110 kW (150 Ps) and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. This motor provides quick acceleration, allowing the vehicle to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds. This provides dynamic and enjoyable driving experience, for both city commutes and highway drives.

The Mahindra XUV400 is equipped with a 39.5 kWh battery giving a substantial range of 456 km as per the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC). The electric SUV supports both AC and DC charging options. Using a 3.3 kW AC charger, the battery charges in about 13.5 hours, while a 7.2 kW AC charger reduces this time to 6.5 hours. For quicker charging, the 50 kW DC fast charger can charge the battery to 80% in just 50 minutes, making it easier to reduce time for long trips and reducing downtime.

The XUV400’s suspension system includes a McPherson Strut with an Anti-Roll Bar at the front and a Twist Beam with Coil Spring at the rear for a smooth and stable ride. It features disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels with ABS and EBD. It has a tyre size of 205/65 R16 for both front and rear, and a spare tyre size of 135/90 R16.

Safety and Features

The Mahindra XUV400 EV has a comprehensive safety measures to ensure maximum protection and convenience. It is equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), six airbags that meet ISO standards, disc brakes on all four wheels for superior stopping power and IP67 compliance ensures the battery is safeguarded against dust and water.

Additional safety and convenience features include a rearview camera, intelligent light-sensing headlamps, smart rain-sensing wipers and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The XUV400 has hill hold assist, ISOFIX/child anchors, seat belt reminders and advanced door locking and unlocking systems.
