Kia EV9: Kia’s flagship 7-seater electric car is official in Nepal

The South Korean car manufacturer, Kia has launched its flagship electric car, the Kia EV9 in Nepal. First launched in June of 2023 in South Korea, the electric SUV has been getting much attention. The EV9 continues the EV series from Kia which also includes the Kia EV6 which has already got a lot of attention in Nepal. Kia has also unveiled the Kia EV5 and the Kia EV3 recently which will continue the EV lineup from Kia.

The flagship electric SUV defines premiumness and comfort in the list of luxurious electric cars available in Nepal. The electric car won the 2024 World Car of the Year and the 2024 World Electric Vehicle. The EV9 has become popular in the electric SUV segment as a family car for the three-row seating option, modern features, looks and technology.

In Nepal, the EV9 will be competing against the BYD Seal, BMW iX3 and the Audi e-tron Q8. With the significant rise of electric cars in all the price ranges in Nepal, for those who are looking for a premium 7-seater electric car, the EV9 can be a great option.

Design

Exterior

The Kia EV9 has a completely modern and futuristic look from all sides. The electric SUV is based on Hyundai’s E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). It is the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Genesis GV60, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Kia EV6. Even though the EV9 shares the same platform as the other Hyundai electric cars, the EV9 has a completely new design.

With Kia EV9 as the top-of-the-line option from Kia, the design can be seen on the upcoming Kia EV3 and the EV5. The Kia EV9 is inspired by the brand’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy and combines elements from nature and materials modern and aesthetic look. The exterior is based on the ‘Bold for Nature’ concept for a serene and sophisticated electric SUV design. The front of the EV9 features clear-cut lines and surfaces. It includes the ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille,’ vertical headlamps and the futuristic ‘Digital Tiger Face’ with unique LED lights. The LED DRLs have a unique design which has an aggressive modern design.

The sides feature a combination of futuristic, high tech and solid design features. The electric SUV has a drag coefficient of 0.28 giving it better performance and range. The doors are wide making it easier to enter and leave. The 19-inch wheel has a modern designed wheel cover. The rear of the Kia EV9 continues the clean design with slim rear lights that are similar to the front lighting setup. The rear windows are large giving a proper view of the back.

Interior

The interior of the Kia EV9 continues the modern and simplistic look. Kia has implemented their sustainability initiative for interior parts, including bioplastics, PCM plastic, bio PU foam, recycled PET fabric, bio paint, recycled PET felt, BTX-free paint, recycled PET yarns, bio PU and recycled PET fishing net carpet.

The front dash features a clean design with a large connected curved panoramic infotainment screen and instrument cluster. The recycled soft-touch materials complement the premium feel. The steering wheel is a sleek with multi-function design and easy access to driver assistance. The steering wheel features cruise control, media control, modes, voice control, volume control and call control buttons. The left side of the steering wheel has the indicator shifter whereas the right side has the fear shifter which includes the drive, neutral, reverse and park.

The digital instrument cluster has a clean UI and functionality. It displays important information such as speed, range, tyre pressure, modes, battery charge and safety features. The digital instrument cluster is seamless with the 12.3-inch infotainment display. The infotainment display has connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment display has various functions for navigation, seating controls, music, settings and climate control.

The Kia EV9’s climate control is integrated into the touchscreen infotainment system. It allows for a clean and minimalist aesthetic but the EV9 does have some physical buttons for temperature adjustment, fan speed and warning lights. The centre console has a large storage area along with a wireless charging pad and cup holders.

The Kia EV9 has seating for seven passengers across three rows. The front seats have an electrically adjustable function. Second-row seats offer ample legroom whereas the third-row seats also have decent legroom and headroom which is best suited for children. The Kia EV9 has two sunroofs which allow ample sunlight to enter the cabin.

For boot space, the Kia EV9 has 90 litres in the front trunk whereas, at the back with the third-row seats up, it has a boot space of 333 litres whereas when the third-row seats are folded down the boot space increases up to 828 litres.

Performance

The Kia EV9 is powered by a 160 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) which delivers a maximum power of 215 hp between 4400-9000 rpm and a maximum torque of 350 Nm which allows the EV9 to reach a top speed of 190 km/h. It offers a smooth and powerful drive with its Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) system.

The electric SUV is equipped with a 4th Generation 76.1 kWh battery, which provides a range of 443 km on a full charge, according to the WLTP standard. Charging is convenient with an 11 kW AC charging capacity. It also supports DCV charging allowing it for fast charging from 20-80% in about 28 minutes.

The EV9’s suspension system includes a MacPherson Strut with Dual Lower Arm Type at the front and a 5-link Multi-Link Rear Suspension at the back for a comfortable ride. Both front and rear brakes are ventilated discs, offering strong and reliable stopping power. It has 19-inch wheels with 255/60 R19 tyres, providing good grip and handling.
