20 students preparing to protest outside Indian Embassy detained

Cadres of a student union detained while preparing to stage a protest against the Indian government, in Kathmandu, on Saturday, May 9, 2020.

Kathmandu, May 9

Police have detained about 20 students who came to the streets of Kathmandu to protest against the recent announcement of the Indian government to open the link road to Mansarovar that passes through an area that has remained disputed between Nepal and India.

The detainees belong to the Nepal Communist Party-aligned All Nepal National Free Students’ Union. They were preparing to stage a demonstration outside the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.

As soon as they gathered in front of the Singhadurbar’s east gate, police personnel took the students under their control, informs student leader Sudesh Parajuli.

Indian Minister for Defence Rajnath Singh had inaugurated the road link to Manasarovar, a popular Hindu pilgrimage site in Tibet of China, via Gunji, a disputed area which both Nepal and India claim ownership over, through a video conference on Friday.
