15-point code implemented for new local level leaders

Kathmandu, June 1

The government has implemented a 15-point code of conduct for newly elected people’s representatives at the local level.

The Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday endorsed the conduct so as to prevent abuse of authority from the new leaders, a government source informs.

The code is also necessary to maintain uniformity in performance and working style of all the local government across the nation, according to Dinesh Thapaliya, Secretary at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development.

“The code of conduct has been introduced in order to make works of people’s representatives easy as the local structure is new and the people’s representatives also have less experiences,” he says, “We have told them to compulsorily abide by it.”

Some points of code of conduct are:

1. Don’t act against national unity, independence and integrity.
2. Don’t jeopardise the interrelationship among local, provincial and federal governments.
3. Don’t misuse and abuse resources.
4. Effectively carry out the responsibility assigned by the law.
5. Don’t make assurances except those authorised by the law.
6. Don’t discriminate on the basis of political ideology.
7. Speak politely; respect others.
8. Don’t show any conduct against social norms and values.
9. Don’t employ government staff for personal jobs; don’t use child labour.
10. Be rational in deciding your own facilities.
