Supreme Court crisis: 12 injured in tussle between Bar officials and police

Kathmandu, November 18

At least 12 agitating lawyers, including Nepal Bar Association chief Chandeshwar Shrestha, have been injured after the police used force to disperse them at the Supreme Court on Thursday.

They were staging a sit-in protest to stop chief justice, Cholendra Shamsher Rana, from entering the Supreme Court as their three-day ultimatum given to him ended on Thursday. The riot police, bearing batons and guns, then dispersed the crowd using force, say lawyers.

Shrestha has been taken to a hospital for treatment. Senior advocates Sabita Bhandari, Rishi Ram Ghimire and Prakash Maharjan have also been injured in the clash. A police officer has also been injured.

Agitating lawyers have condemned the act and accused the secretary of the Supreme Court, Lala Bahadur Kunwar, of using police force to silence them. They have asked Kunwar to remove riot police from the court premises.

Details to follow.
