11.2 million SMSes sent during post-flood tariff waiver: Nepal Telecom

Kathmandu, August 17

Nepal Telecom says around 11.2 million short messages have been sent and received within its network from Sunday to Tuesday as the company had announced that it would not charge any cost for the service during this period in a bid to give relief to flood victims and their relatives.

While 1.73 million SMSes were sent on Sunday, the numbers stood at 4.755 million and 4.715 million on next two days, the company says.

Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has alerted as many more than 486,000 people about possible floods and landslides by using the free SMS service, according to the company.

The company has allowed the Department to use the service free of cost anytime it needs as the two bodies had signed an agreement last year about sending SMS alerts for awareness.

The NT says it is repairing equipment damaged by the floods and resuming its services in all parts of the country.
