Votes of Phase-I elections to be counted immediately after polls

Kathmandu, May 8

Major three political parties have agreed to count votes of the first phase of local level elections immediately after the conclusion of voting.

That means the Election Commission will be told not to wait for the second phase of elections, which will be one month away, to count the votes.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal made the agreement in a meeting held among them on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the parties have said they are also positive about bringing the budget plan for next fiscal year without incorporating new programmes on May 29 and holding the polls on June 14.

Earlier, the UML had been adamant that the budget plan could not be introduced between two phases of elections and hence the polls should be preponed to a date earlier than May 29.

Though the UML has dropped its stance over the budget, it is still rigid that the constitution amendment bill tabled in Parliament cannot be endorsed.

Madhesh-centric parties have been demanding that the constitution amendment is a must to let them take part in the second phase of elections.
