Province 5: Chief Minister Pokhrel officially secures majority

Kathmandu, March 11

Province 5 Chief Minister Shanker Pokhrel has secured the support a majority of lawmakers in the provincial assembly.

A confidence motion was presented before the assembly on Sunday afternoon. According to officials, 66 members voted in Pokhrel’s favour while 18 voted against the motion. Pokhrel was appointed to the top post with backing from his own party the CPN UML and the allies CPN Maoist Centre.

In his speech before assembly, Pokhrel said that he needed the support of all MLAs to bring the ‘Chinese train’ to Lumbini. Pokhrel called on all political parties to help expedite the proposed East-West Railway. Pokhrel assured that the province’s capital will be chosen by considering the needs of the people.
