Nepal to face Bhutan in Women’s SAFF championship opener

Kathmandu, December 14

The schedule for the fifth edition of the Women’s SAFF Championship taking place in Nepal from March 12 to 22 has been unveiled.

Nepal will compete with the likes of Bhutan, Pakistan and Bangladesh in Group A while India, Maldives and Sri Lanka have been drawn in Group B.

Nepal will face Bhutan in the inaugural match on March 12 at the Martyrs Stadium in Biratnagar followed by matches against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Thirty-three players have begun training at the Satdobato-based ANFA Complex under head coach Hari Khadka.

Nepal, considered a strong force in South Asia, is yet to break India’s reign to win the title. The southern neighbour has remained undefeated in all editions of the tournament.

The tournament, which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, was given to Nepal after Sri Lanka expressed its inability to host it citing political instability.

The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) postponed the match fot a month and decided to organise it in Nepal. Nepal team Captain Niru Thapa said the team is focussed and hungry to be champions in their own backyard.
