Nepal Police Headquarters forms panel to investigate Jumla clash

A clash between locals and police, at the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences, in Jumla, on Thursday, July 19, 2018.

Kathmandu, July 23

The Nepal Police Headquarters on Monday formed a committee to investigate into a clash ensued between security personnel and locals of Jumla at the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences last Thursday, when police used force to airlift fasting medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC to Kathmandu.

Police Chief for Karnali Province, DIG Suresh Bikram Shah, heads the three-member committee. SP Kedar Rajaure and DSP Chudamani Budhathoki are two other members.

SSP Shailesh Thapa, spokesperson at the Headquarters, says the panel was formed to carry out an internal investigation into the incident as some of its personnel also sustained injuries.

Immediately after the clash it was rumoured that a police constable died in the incident. Later, it was found that he had sustained critical injuries. It has been suspected that local police officials created the rumours themselves so as to disperse the mob more easily.

The policeman, identified as constable Kamal Upadhyaya, is still undergoing treatment.
