Kathmandu, September 30

A Member of Parliament from the ruling Nepali Congress has called for recognition of Hindi as Nepal’s national language (lingua franca).

Speaking in the Parliament on Friday, lawmaker Dev Narayan Kalwar said: Eighty per cent Nepalis understand Hindi, so it should get the recognition of national language.

He called on Nepal’s Prime Minister Prachanda to initiate a Constitution amendment process for giving Hindi official recognition of the national language.

Citing the findings of a study, Kalwar claimed that 50 per cent of Nepal’s population speaks Hindi and 80 per cent understands it.

Therefore, Kalwar said, Hindi should be the national language of Nepal.

All along, Kalwar was speaking in Nepali.
