Minister Pokharel: Govt is ready to implement Mathema report

Giri Raj Mani Pokharel

Kathmandu, July 8

Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel says the government is ready to implement the report prepared by a panel led by educationist Kedar Bhakta Mathema on reforming Nepal’s medical education sector.

Implementing the report is a key demand of medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging a fast-unto-death in Jumla of Karnali for last one week.

Speaking at a function organised in Kathmandu today, the Minister also said the government was ready to implement all recommendations of the Mathema commission.

Therefore, he urged the fasting doctor to postpone his strike and join the negotiation table to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, he claimed that the government had not changed the previous Medical Education Ordinance as it prepared the new Medical Education Bill recently registered in Parliament for discussion and endorsement.

He was of the view that a new high level commission proposed in the bill will be instrumental in solving existing problems in the sector.
