Elite Sherpa perishes on Everest; toll reaches four

Kathmandu, May 22

An elite Sherpa guide helping his clients scale Everest has died on Camp II of the world’s highest peak, the company that was organising the expedition said.

Damai Sarki Sherpa (38), an International Federation of Mountain Guides Association-certified mountain guide, died after falling into a crevasse near the Camp II on Mount Everest on Monday night, a spokesperson for the expedition company Seven Summits Adventure told Onlinekhabar.

“Sherpa fell into a crevasse on Camp II and was pulled out by rescuers on Monday evening,” said Nivesh Karki of Seven Summits. He said that Sherpa died within a few hours after the rescue operation. Three people have already died on Everest this season as they tried to reach the summit of the 8,848m peak.

Prior to this, a Japanese, another Sherpa guide and a Macedonian climber have already lost their lives on the mountain this season. Similarly, a Russian climber also died while making his way to Mt Lhotse, which shares its route with Eeverest.
