American duo sets record by skiing off Lhotse

Skiers Hilaree Nelson and James Morrison have registered their names in history by becoming the first duo to ski off the world’s fourth highest peak.

According to their expedition organiser Xtreme Climbers Treks and Expedition, the duo ski down of them made a skied off Mt Lhotse after reaching the summit at 1:27pm.

The duo climbed the world’s highest peak with Dutch Simpson and Nick Kalisz, and descended the ‘Dream Line’ in challenging conditions. They were accompanied by Sherpas Ila Nuru Sherpa, Fu Tashi Sherpa and Urken Lendu Sherpa who set up ropes to the summit.

This morning, @hilareenelson and @jimwmorrison became the first humans in history to ski the Lhotse Couloir. After summiting Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain on earth, Hilaree and Jim made a 7000 ft descent. We couldn’t be more proud. “They skied down to Camp II yesterday and to Camp I today covering a total of around 7,000-vertical-foot ski line. They are returning to base camp right now,” Pemba Sherpa the co-founder of Xtreme Climbers Treks and Expedition told Onlinekhabar.

In an interview with Outside, Nelson said that she wanted to do it in autumn because the monsoon rains would leave plenty of snow in the mountain making it easier to make the descent.

Nelson and Morrison are two of the most experienced ski mountaineers in the world. Together, they have climbed and skied Denali (20,310 feet) in Alaska and Papsura (21,165 feet), in India.

Nelson, who was voted Nat Geo Adventurer of the Year in 2018, stood on top of Lhotse after linking it with neighbouring Mt. Everest in 2012. She has skied off the summit of Cho Oyu, and was also the first woman to ski off Makalu.
