Nawalpur man attacks woman with acid, stabs her multiple times

Chitwan, September 25

A 27-year-old woman has been seriously injured after a 36-year-old man threw acid at her and stabbed her multiple times for allegedly ‘not abiding by past agreements’.

The incident came to light two days after another acid attack victim succumbed to her injuries in Rautahat. According to police, the incident took place on Sunday as Basanti Pariyar, a resident of Kawasoti Municipality-9, was shopping vegetables at a local market.

Doctors involved in her treatment say that 25 per cent of her body sustains burn injuries. The stab wound on her left chest threatens her lung, that on the right has affected her intestine, doctors say.

Police have arrested Bimal Shirpali, a resident of Nawalpur, for allegedly perpetrating the attack. In his statement to authorities, Shripali said he attacked Pariyar because she did not abide by past agreements. Nawalpur Police chief Ramesh Thapa said that Shripali bought the acid used in the attack from India. “He attacked her after she declined his offer to tie the knot,” said Thapa.

Pariyar, a mother of a son and a daughter, was living with her in-laws after her husband moved to Malaysia for work. Shripali and her husband Yam Narayan were good friends and both of them went abroad for work around the same time. However, Shripali returned to Nepal six months ago. His wife lives with her parents and the couple are about to get divorced.

Pariyar and her cousin Anu were shopping at a local market when Shripali attacked her from behind, threw acid on her face and stabbed her multiple times. Paryiar’s cousin, who tried to stop him, also sustained injuries.
