5,180 Kathmandu road accidents killed 149 persons in 10 months: Police

Kathmandu, June 19

Traffic police in Kathmandu say as many as 5,180 road accidents have been recorded in Kathmandu Valley in the first 10 months current fiscal year. Total 149 persons lost their lives.

Most of the people, who lost their lives in road accidents, were between 17 and 35 years of age.

Out of 149 people, 80 belonged to this age group. Similarly, 15 were under 16 and 54 were above 36 years.

In these accidents, 184 people were critically injured and 3,485 received minor injuries.

Chief at the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, Basanta Kumar Panta, said that riding motorcycle in an excessive speed by the people aged between 16 and 35 years is the main cause behind the increasing number of road accidents. Most of the people killed in the road accidents were motorcyclists.

A total of 166 people lost their lives in road accidents in Kathmandu Valley in 2015/16. The number had increased to 182 in 2017/17.

Traffic in the Kathmandu valley is being managed through 40 traffic police units.

The number of vehicles in Kathmandu Valley is so high that it is said one traffic police personnel has to manage 1,044 vehicles.
