Yamaha MT-15 BS6 in Nepal: The new bike from an old brand will go ahead amid a tough competition

Yamaha MT-15 BS6 is the latest two-wheeler from Yamaha in Nepal to get the new BS6 compatible engine.

Since BS6 has been standardised in India, the effects can be seen hugely in Nepal as well. Almost every vehicle now has the BS6 compatible engine and if they do not, they are on the transition phase to get one. Since Nepal imports almost every two-wheeler from India, this means all the coming vehicles will have BS6 engines in them.

MT is a naked sports bike series that got popular in no time here in Nepal. The bike is really popular among the youth as it provides superior power figures in a slim design body than the other 150cc bikes available. The MT on Yamaha MT-15 BS6 stands for master of torque, clearly defining the bike. Yamaha uses the name MT for its naked sportbike series like it uses R for racing sport bikes series. Though it has been some time since the BS4 variant of the bike was released in Nepal, the BS6 has just made its way here.

The new variant of the bike comes with an increase in price but a decrease in power. The decrease in power is seen in every other BS6 vehicle as well, so this should not be an issue.

Let’s get into the details of the bike

Design

Yamaha MT-15 BS6

Inspired by the “dark warrior of Japan”, Yamaha MT-15 BS6 has a sleek and sassy design. However, there are no significant changes on the bike in terms of looks.  At the front, it gets a bi-functional LED headlamp and the headlamp cluster gets a twin-LED position lamp. These lamps give a unique impression of the eyes and beneath the lamps is a LED projector lamp.

Yamaha MT-15 BS6 adopts the Deltabox frame which is seen in the R15 series also. The frame provides superb rigidity balance. The bike sports a slim muscular body and the fuel tank on the bike only adds beauty to the bike. Yamaha offers an excellent riding posture on their bike. The single-unit handlebar on the bike keeps an upright and comfortable riding position.

The tail lamp has been integrated at the rear of the seat. The exhaust produces the sound that compliments the feel of a sports bike. It features a single-seat design and the pillion rider may not get enough space like they would on other bikes.

Performance

Yamaha MT-15 BS6 is powered by the same 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine that can be seen in the YZF-R15. The engine on the bike can generate a maximum power of 18.5PS @ 10,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 13.9Nm @ 8500rpm. It also features a variable valve actuation (VVA) system. This gets the engine more refined low-end torque, which means it gets an advantage during the initial acceleration.

Yamaha MT-15 BS6 features telescopic forks at the front and a mono-shock suspension at the rear. This should allow the users to go through small potholes without hurting their back. The bike is equipped with a six-speed gearbox and can reach a top speed of up to 144kmph, which is extremely high considering that this is just a 155cc bike. But, then again, it is a power performer in this category.

It is said the bike remains stable even on the higher gears and higher speed. The 6th gear is something that is missing on the FZ series available in Nepal and MT has just delivered that extra kick to the riders.

Safety and Other features

Yamaha MT-15 BS6 features a dual-disc brake with a single-channel ABS. It also gets a slip and assists clutch, which is no surprise for a bike of this calibre. The assist and slip clutch helps reduce the weight of the clutch pull and provides low-stress shifting during deceleration. This also prevents excessive engine braking.

Highlighting the features of Yamaha MT-15 BS6, it has:

  • 155cc liquid-cooled FI engine
  • VVA system
  • Assist and slipper clutch
  • 6-speed transmission
  • Single-channel ABS
  • BI functional LED headlights
  • Lightweight body
  • Negative LCD display with gear shift indication
  • Deltabox frame
  • Raised LED tail light
  • Side stand cut off switch

The price of the Yamaha MT-15 BS6 is Rs 459,900. This is an increase of Rs 17,000 from the BS4 variant.

Verdict

In this price range, Yamaha MT-15 BS6 competes against the likes of Yamaha R15v3, Yamaha FZ25, Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 ABS FI, Apache RTR 200 4V RTFI BS6 and Honda Hornet 2.0. Comparing all the bikes, Apache seems to provide more value for money with various useful features. Yet, Yamaha is greatly known for the quality of its bike and the new MT-15 BS6 is no exception. It is one of the best looking bikes and its performance and reliability are rarely matched by any in this category. No bike in the 150cc category can match the power of this bike except for Yamaha’s own R15 series.

No wonder it got popular in no time here in Nepal and will continue to gain popularity like the R series.
