Kathmandu, June 17

The Supreme Court on Sunday issued a show cause notice to the Election Commission asking why it should not cancel the registration of newly unified Nepal Communist Party.

Earlier, advocates and women’s rights activities had filed a case at the apex court demanding that the decision to register the party be revoked as it has not fulfilled the requirement that a party must have 33 per cent women in its central committee.

A single bench of Justice Anil Kumar Sinha made the order.

The Commission around 10 days ago had handed over the registration certificate to the party after it assured that the 33 per cent women’s requirement would be fulfilled by the next general convention.

The party was formed with the merger of then CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre.
