US to evacuate its citizens from Nepal Tuesday

Kathmandu, March 30

The United States government is chartering a flight from Kathmandu on Tuesday to evacuate its citizens stranded in Nepal due to the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the outbreak of coronavirus infection in the country.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu says it has chartered a Qatar Airways aircraft to take its citizens back to Dulles International Airport in the Washington, DC area, via Doha tomorrow.

Since there are many American citizens willing to go back, the one flight will not be sufficient, and preparations are underway to arrange a second repatriation flight also, according to the embassy.

“As for this first flight, we will be operating using State Department guidance to prioritise passengers,” the embassy says adding the passengers will be prioritised based on their risk level in Nepal (including age and other underlying health conditions), their need for medical assistance, and the first come first serve basis.
